FYFIELD
Old English 'fif hida'='(the) 5 hides', cf HYDE ABBEY. The Domesday Book assessment of the manor is indeed 5 hides. The first distortion of the second element is 1535 'Fyfeld'. Thus also the same name in Berkshire, Essex, Gloucestershire, 'West Fifield' twice in each of Oxfordshire and Wiltshire and 'Fifehead' three times in Dorset. The frequency of the name is due to such an area being the standard holding of a thegn. Cf TOYD FARM.
